Four cops killed as militants attack Police post in Shopian, decamp with rifles | KNO

Srinagar, December 11 (KNO) : Four policemen were killed on Tuesday after militants attacked Police Post in Zainapora area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district and snatched four rifles as well. A top police official told KNO that the militants attacked the Police post in Zainapora in which four policemen lost their lives. He said that the militants also snatched three rifles of the cops there. Police said that “the militants fired indiscriminately on a guard post at Zainapora area of Shopian in which four cops sustained injuries,” police said, adding that three among them succumbed to the injuries while the other injured has been shifted to the hospital for medical treatment. However, the injured cop also succumbed to his injuries later, taking the death toll to four. Police identified the slain cops as constable Anees Ahmad Belt No. 480/SPN, resident of Kulgam, sgct Abdul Majid, 193/SPN, resident of Ganderbal, Constable Mehraj u din, 477/SPN,Resident of Hajin Bandipora, and constable Hameed ullah 860/SPN resident of Anantnag. Police said that area has been cordoned off and search has been initiated in the area. Governor, various political parties and leaders condemned the killing of four cops. Governor Satya Pal Malik has expressed grief over the loss of lives of policemen who were martyred today in a terrorist attack on a police post at Zainapora in Shopian. In a message Governor has prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families. Meanwhile, former chief minister and NC vice president, Omar Abdullah condoled the death of cops and prayed for their souls.“I strongly condemn the attack on the police post in Shopian & condole the deaths of three @JmuKmrPolice personnel in the line of duty. I pray for their souls & for the speedy recovery of those injured in this attack,” Omar tweeted. Condemning the killing of cops, former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti expressed solidarity with the families of slain cops. “Strongly condemn attack on policemen in Shopian claiming 3 precious lives. Bears repetition, violence achieves nothing but destruction. Solidarity with families of jawans .Relieved that no harm caused to any civilians in the minority pocket they guarded,” Mehbooba tweeted. Peoples Conference (PC) Chairman, Sajad Gani Lone termed the attack on policemen as ‘another mindless act of violence’. “The attack in Shopian on police personnel is yet another mindless act of violence. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the policemen who laid down their lives in the line of duty,” Lone said.(KNO)
